Rue Bourbon Bar & Restaurant has a notorious reputation as a watering hole, but of the few times I’ve been, I learned that its savory dishes are worth a go, too.
Their Five Cheese Pizza with Roast Garlic (Php450) was just okay. It was yummy, but I felt like it lacked a contrasting flavor. Perhaps a little hot sauce would’ve helped; after all, too much of something (in this case, cheese), can prove exhausting to one’s taste buds. My recommendation is to order another dish with more flavor so the palate is treated to more variety.
Also, just to note: this pizza is best consumed when served. A few hours/days after and already you’d find the (what was once a) melt-in-your-mouth treat to be something you’d eat for the heck of it.
Their Bourbon Barbeque Ribs (Php285) were a great companion to the pizza. Different flavors in one dish — now, we’re talking. I didn’t like though that the meat had a substantial amount of fat. (I hate fat.) Buuut I found that the meat itself was excellent with the jambalaya rice — thanks to the delicious sauce! I would give this a 4/5 in terms of flavor, but a 3.5/5 overall just because I’ve had better ribs done in choice cuts.
I wasn’t in the mood for alcohol that day, so I took the healthy route with their Dayap Juice (Php65). I liked how this was heavily packed with real fruit bits, and that each sip left a cool, tangy aftertaste.
On a different note, this particular trip to Rue Bourbon was a disaster. We kept having to change tables in between bites as there were cockroaches (*cringe*) EVERYWHERE. The servers were quick to say that they’d just had the place fumigated the day before, as if to justify why the creepy crawlers had come out to play. This reason though is simply unacceptable! And since my companion and I refused to dine in this type of environment (really, who would?), we got the bill immediately and just had the food (or what was left of it) wrapped to go.
Seeing that we were so obviously ticked off by the cleanliness of the place, Rue Bourbon rewarded us with a 5% discount (which was really just Php40). Boo! I do hope they do something about this!
