Barcino has long been a go-to place when I’m in the mood for some good old sangria. Theirs remains a favourite, at least of the few I’ve tried over the years (and come to think of it, my experience with sangria hasn’t been as extensive as I hoped haha).
Anyway, here’s a backgrounder on Barcino before I tell you about my recent trip to the place: it was introduced to Manila back in 2004 as a quaint, little shop serving wine and tapas. Fast forward to several years and branches opened later and it’s turned into a hip and happening place for quality wine and delicious Spanish food!
What I like about the place (next to the obvious: sangria), is that the atmosphere is very laid-back. It’s an ideal place for night outs! :)
They serve you toasted bread with their specialty salsa as you wait for your drink/food. Sometimes they serve chips, too — the specialty made ones, not the kinds you can easily get in groceries. Anyway, if you are up for some flavor, I would recommend that you utilize everything on this platter: salt, oil, salsa, and bread.
We got yummy Gambas Al Ajillo (Php470) to start off dinner. One word to describe these: spectacular. Nice celebration of flavors in this dish — sweet and spicy gambas swimming in garlicky oil. Quite possibly one of the better gambas I’ve had.
Their Espaguetis A La Carbonara (Php290) was just as special. This was extra creamy/cheesy, not at all run-of-the-mill.
Their Churros con Chocolate (Php225) were A+! Barcino’s are an excellent take on the Spanish delicacy: fried dough strips coated in sugar and dipped in rich chocolate sauce. I savoured every bit of this yummy dessert!
And OF COURSE, their Sangria (Php280 for a glass, Php840 for a pitcher) is the star of the show. I like that Barcino doesn’t skimp on the ingredients. :)
Here are some other Barcino dishes that I would recommend:
- Espaguetis A La Marinera (Php295) - A light spicy blend of chili, garlic, parsley, and clams on a bed of pasta
- Ensalata de Pollo y Mango (Php245) - Lettuce, tomato, roast chicken, and mango with citrus vinaigrette
- Chistorra (Php330) - Fried chistorra in olive oil
